A rich history as one of Tacoma’s oldest neighborhoods and a strong sense of community are part of what make the Upper Tacoma neighborhood so special. The area is home to one of the city’s largest concentrations of churches as well as several other community institutions, including St. Joseph’s Medical Center, the Evergreen State College and Bates Technical College.

Upper Tacoma’s rich ethnic diversity is celebrated every year in People’s Park where colorful murals and other public art displays form a fitting backdrop for the popular Music and Murals in the Park celebration and the City of Destiny Festival.

How to find us? The Upper Tacoma Business District sits on a hill overlooking downtown Tacoma and Commencement Bay, thus earning it its nickname, “The Hilltop.” The district is boarded by Sprague and Tacoma avenues on the east and west and by 6th Avenue and 25th Street on the north and south. The heart of the district is Martin Luther King, Jr. Way from 9th to 19th streets.
